A bump stop is a rubber stop that prevents a damper from compressing fully and the main body striking the piston. A bump stop reduces the impulse of a full compression by spreading the total force out over a longer time thus reducing the peak of the force felt. This avoids damage to the damper and does not jolt the chassis of the car as violently.
