Sprung mass is all of the mass on the vehicle supported by the suspension. This includes the chassis of the car as well as part of the suspension.
To Calculate
Add the mass of the half of the suspension that is connected to the chassis to the chassis' mass to determine the sprung mass. For example, on the F25 to calculate sprung mass the following would be summed:
- half the weight of each control arm
- half the weight of each rear toe rod
- half the weight of each CV axle
- half the weight of each tie rod
- and all of the chassis' weight (and everything on it)
Alternatively, sprung mass can be calculated by deducting the unsprung mass from the total vehicle mass.
